Meet the ingredients: Matcha

Today we would like to introduce you to our ultimate super food (or super drink) – matcha! This little guy has had a lot of attention lately, and rightfully so!

So… what exactly is matcha?

Matcha is a type of green tea. However, it is different to regular green tea. The matcha process involves shade growing green tea leaves for three weeks before, removing all veins and stems. Here at Teaforia, we then stone grind the leaves to make a fine, dissolvable powder. This results in the potently antioxidant matcha powder!

Matcha has found fame in the health world of late. Hailed as 2016’s biggest superfood, the king of green teas, and the one super food that’s worth the hype (1, 2, 3). So why has matcha had so much attention? Japanese matcha is jam packed with antioxidants. Antioxidants are so important as they aid in preventing disease=causing free radicals. Matcha can also help with weight loss and helps boost focus and alertness. What’s not to love!

Luckily, it is also delicious (whew!!), making it the perfect, guilt free treat. In fact, it’s a rather virtuous treat, with 10x the nutrients of regular green tea! Teaforia’s distinctive stone grinding process means every last one of these nutrients is consumed, not wasted. Stone grinding tea means it maintains up to 90% more of its original nutrients than loose tea leaves or bags.

We aren’t the only ones to get on the matcha train; health conscious celebs like Gwyneth Paltrow, Ashley Olsen, Kristin Cavallari and Alessandra Ambrosio have all been spotted sipping on the green super drink lately. Could this be the secret behind their Hollywood  glow?!

We aim to make matcha accessible and tasty. Instead of just making a straight forward matcha powder, we do a variation of matcha flavours for every palate. We invite you to take a look:

  • Kyo Matcha Latte – This slightly sweeter blend takes on the texture of a smooth, creamy latte with a hit of vanilla.
  • Citrus Zen – a blend of matcha with dehydrated natural zesty lemon and a hint of exotic lemongrass – the perfect wake up call and lovely as iced tea for summer.
  • Premium Matcha and Ceremonial Matcha – both these blend are made of 100% pure hand picked, Organic Japanese matcha green tea powder. These two are the more traditional matcha powders. The Premium Matcha is great as a tea shot but can also be used in drink recipes and even baking. The Ceremonial matcha is first flush tea (top of the top!) and makes a great power shot to pick you up.

So, you’re bound to find your matcha match here at Teaforia!
